Important Regulatory Update for All DG Professionals
We would like to inform our students, alumni, and aviation safety professionals that IATA has issued Addendum 1 to the 66th Edition of the Dangerous Goods Regulations (DGR). This update was officially posted on 30 April 2025 and is effective from 1 January 2025.
The addendum introduces important amendments and clarifications across various sections of the DGR, and it is essential that all DG handlers, shippers, and aviation stakeholders review and incorporate these changes into their procedures.
🔍 Key Highlights from the Addendum
✅ Section 1 – Clarifications on Lithium Battery Handling
- Updated interpretation of “adequate instruction” under Section II for lithium and sodium batteries (PI 966, 967, 969, 970, 977, 978).
- Employers must now ensure proper documented instruction, classification understanding, and written work procedures for staff handling these shipments.
🌐 Section 2 – State Variations
- New variations introduced for:
- Kosovo (KSG)
- United Arab Emirates (AEG)
- United Kingdom (GBG)
- Canada (CAG) and Chile (CLG) regulations have also been amended with updates regarding explosives, SDS requirements, and radioactive material handling.
🛫 Section 2 – Operator Variations
- Several airlines including Air Canada (AC), Cargolux (CV), DHL Express (multiple entities), PIA (PK), Jambojet (JM), and others have updated their operator-specific restrictions and documentation requirements.
- Specific focus placed on lithium/sodium battery shipments, especially regarding state of charge (SOC), packaging, and overpack requirements.
- Increased emphasis on 24-hour emergency contact information being mandatory on the Shipper’s Declaration for Dangerous Goods (DGD).
